Essays in History generally adheres to the standards set forth in The Chicago Manual of Style, 14th ed. (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1993). Notable exceptions are listed on our style sheet. Because Essays in History is a journal of general interest to historians of various periods, authors should take care to make their submissions interesting and comprehensible to a scholarly, nonspecialist audience. They should avoid jargon and should not assume that readers have detailed knowledge of their subjects or fields.

Essays in History is a small organization and does not have the resources to review every book. Although the editorial board attempts to ensure that each issue includes a variety of reviews, no guarantee can be given that a particular item will be reviewed.
Essays in History generally does not accept unsolicited reviews. If you are interested in writing a review for publication in the journal, please send the book review editor a letter introducing yourself, giving particular attention to your areas of scholarly interest. You and the book review editor, in collaboration, will select a book for you to review.
